dear g,
i crushed on you soooo hard for all of highschool. you finally kissed me in my backyard the week before you moved away. two years later you left me a secret-admirer valentine on my car, and last summer you took me on a date to the zoo. what is uuuuup with that?

dear m,
you were tall and nice and took me to a lot of Jazz games. then you moved to vernal for the summer and I sort of forgot about you. sorry...

dear s,
you're part of the reason i forgot about M. we went on a lot of adventures and you made me a comic book. we're still friends, and that makes me happy.

dear f,
you had a cool last name, and dated both of my roommates (and i dated one of yours). i liked you but only sometimes. i broke up with you, but then kept kissing you. i'm not sure why.

dear w,
you were "outdoorsy." you sneak-attacked me to make me meet your parents and i pretended to like curb your enthusiasm as much as you did. i can't stand to watch it now. you dumped me the day before school started, and all our shared co-workers avoided me.

dear c,
we spent the summer getting snocones and going rock climbing (i mainly watched) and hanging out with your best friend. you broke up with me after i moved. and then you kept breaking up with me. i'm not sorry i dated you but i am sorry i let you crush me more than once. and sometimes i still want to egg your van.

dear w,
i burned my leg on your motorcycle, and therefore will remember you forever.

dear brw,
i count the official beginning of our relationship as halloween, which is one of my favorite holidays. you named my cat (so perfectly), and have filled my ipod with hours and hours of musical enjoyment. i like the words you say, and the way you play guitar, and i'm excited to go on more adventures with you. last summer, a friend of a friend told us a story about a competition he and his wife had had with another couple back when they were dating. basically it was to see who could make out in the weirdest spot.

i was immediately intrigued by this idea. it's taken a little time, but i think i finally have all the pieces in place to play this game. (heeeey brian. and ashley. and ray)

however, until this officially starts i'll have my own contest called "wierd places/times i have eaten tacos"

here are five i've already thought of (with an embarrassingly low amount of effort).

1 - in bed. with no shame.
2 - in walmart, after midnight, while buying cleaning supplies.
3 - in the middle of a mardi gras party. we actually left the party to secure said tacos, and shortly after returning the cops came. (as they should have. that mormon dance party was getting out of controool)
4 - during a midnight showing of scott pilgrim.
5 - in my car outside of taco bell. because eating inside alone wasn't sad enough.

last week was most notable because it marked my return to higher education. so far i have few complaints. the teacher for my online class seems....interesting. luckily i can listen to her lectures while doing something more productive. and hopefully this will distract from the way she says "...right?" after every other sentence. i love my other two classes, and it's extremely convenient that they're in the same building, as i am only familiar enough with campus to make it from my car, to class, and back again. i had forgotten how much i love people-watching on campus and hearing snippets of conversation about Childish Gambino and relationships. "dude! you're dating sarah?! yesssssssssss!"

other things that happened this week that i didn't take any pictures of...
- doing homework. what?
- going to a gymnastics meet. umm. it's a super big deal at the U. apparently.
- eating at del taco, for not just the first, but also the second time.
- going to ikea with Brian and then having dinner with the Mangelsons. i really like swedish furniture emporiums, but i like the Mangelson's even more.
- scoring tickets for coachella, round 2.

also. maybe last night was spent falling asleep in my textbook at 10 pm while boyfriend did his french homework. we are wild and crazy.

2011 was about change. it was about eating. a lot. it was about concerts and roadtrips. festivals and movies and being outside. it was about accepting my flaws. and trying to accept others. it was about loving my family more and realizing how strong my friendships are. it was about understanding what i deserve. it was about getting out of bed every day a little happier.

mostly, 2011 was about moving. moving on, moving forward. moving away from things that didn't make me happy, and closer to things that do. moving towards the person i really am.

2011 is the first year i had a grown-up job. it's the year i got a henna tattoo and seriously contemplated getting a real one. it's the year i got a cat, and a boy i would end up dating named him Oskar. it's the year i got my first motorcycle burn and feared for my life accidentally waiting in line for a kottonmouth kings concert. it's the year i went to Coachella and Sundance and watched all 5 seasons of 30 Rock for the first time. it's the year i tried to catch up to technology by getting into podcasts, and instagram, and duct-taping my laptop together.

2011 was a good year. probably one of my favorites. your move, 2012.

so my birthday was really really great. you'll have to just take my word on it, because i took a total of 2 pictures to commemorate the events. (spoiler alert. one has my cat in it, and can be seen at the bottom of this post...)

aaaanyway, here's a list of things i ~~hope to~~ will accomplish in the next year. if this idea sounds familiar, it's because i'm straight-up copying it from several bloggers.

1 - learn to sew. (at least enough to alter a dress)

2 - make a cheesecake. the fancy kind. that you bake.

3 - run 6 consecutive miles. and possibly run a 10k.

4 - make-out at the park and wait at the airport.
5 - eat at a sit down restaurant by myself.
6 - do a photo-a-day blog post.
7 - buy and wear legit heels. more than once.
8 - read at least 5 of the "classic" books i bought my senior year of college.
9 - start doing some of the crafts i save on pinterest. specifically this, this, and this.
10 - watch at least 15 documentaries from this list.

11 - try the oil cleansing method.

12 - go on at least one trip that takes me more than two states away.

13 - go back to school.

14 - learn to make a circle scarf.
15 - print out and make albums of all my favorite pictures.

16 - write letters.

17 - make my own cross-stitch pattern.
18 - make homemade poptarts.
19 - get a passport.
20 - buy something leopard print.

21 - take at least 5 photos a week.

22 - paint my dresser.

23 - go on a water park tour.
24 - make a decent pizza crust.

i sometimes find spoons lying around in my room or next to the couch. it finally occured to me that it's from me eating a spoonful of nutella and then abandoning the spoon.

i wave to people in an arking "pocahontas/wingapo" style.

i say "dope" to the point where it's no longer ironic.

i went to bed with my retainer in and when i woke up it was missing. i fully expected to find it in my bed somewhere or maybe on the ground (once in college i threw my retainer across the room in the middle of the night. hailey found it the next morning lying next to her bed) but it took me a full week to find it in the pocket of the ratty old hoodie i sleep in sometimes. (the embarassing part of that wasn't supposed to be that i still wear a retainer, though in hindsight, it's probably a good addition to the list)

probably 85% of the time i try to put on my cardigan when it's already buttoned up.

i'll never open my eyes again to see you walk away.

i'm usually not big into the rap or hip hop or grinding music or whatever the kids are calling it these days. but i do have few select songs i've always enjoyed that have a bit of that flava (too much?). since i know you were all dying to know what those tracks were, i have compiled a short list of my favorites.

this song capitalizes on my desire to make out in a photo booth and features sufjan stevens. soooo basically...perfection.

what can i say. i have a thing for chipmunk-y voices.

i actually really like this whole album, but i liked this song first. i tried to see lupe at twilight, but due to a crappy crowd and other unforseeable factors it wasn't a super fun experience and i missed this song. oh snap.

tuesday may have seemed ordinary to you, but it marked my official year-iversary of living in salt lake. guys. i've lived here a YEAR. i've been graduated from college for OVER A YEAR. i've had a grown up job for NINE MONTHS. i learned how to type in all caps TODAY.

i know i've already documented the past year on this blog o' mine, but i would like to go back. back a year ago....

(cue swirly music)

i moved to salt lake after a three week stint in my parent's basement. i was maybe a bit eager to get here, and wasn't even deterred when my new room was still full of the previous occupant's furniture. i slept on the mattress she abandoned. (on the floor, as shown in the above facebook status. it's still a mystery to me what became of the boxspring..) also included in my new space were free condoms in the dresser! thusly, i went out that very night to buy a mattress cover and a lunchable. dinner!

things actually got a bit worse before they got better.

within the first month of moving, i hated my waitressing job and...stopped going. i wrecked my car. i got super broke. my boyfriend dumped me. i missed pretty much everyone in logan. even the angry old couple i used to have to wait on all the time.

everything went wrong. everything. i remember my mom asking me why i was staying. because! because i'm stubborn. because i had felt like this was the right decision and i was going to prove it. because i wuss out of so many other things, and i didn't want to this time.

and then! and then things started working out. i got a new car (with air conditioning!) that i didn't even have to take out a loan for. i got a job. and then i got a better job where they like, pay me on holidays. what! i realized how insanely great my roommates were. i met people and learned things that restored my faith in love and relationships and happiness. (i reserve the right to be cheesy for my year-iversary. suck it)

and it's like...things are good. things are great actually. i've had illegal amounts of fun this year. i've made great friends, and cemented bonds with old ones. i've grown up (in ways..) and learned so much and i feel like i'm the most myself that i've ever been.

so salt lake, i'm looking forward to our next year together. what do you have for me? cause i can totally take it.

i am a masochist.

a bold statement. and one brought on by the fact that today i'm wearing the shoes that less than a week ago were causing me to hobble around in pain. why? because no pair of shoes will best me. and why else? because they matched my dress the best...

but thinking about it between each fresh step of regret, i realize there is more evidence to support this claim. i do things i shouldn't all the time. things that i know i shouldn't, that will almost certainly cause pain later.

i stay up late even though i know what time i have to wake up every morning. i spend too much money. i date boys i shouldn't (and for too long.) i procrastinate to the point of ridiculousness.

but don't we all do that? and...isn't it kind of fun? that's why dessert tastes so good. that's why kissing ex-boyfriends is so fun. that's why staying up for ooooone more episode of 30 Rock is so satisfying. i think you have to soak up the happiness before the pain inevitably comes.

and i kind of think that's just part of being human. that's how we learn. and it's good to be aware of it. but...it's still going to happen. even though i know better. and even though these shoes may cause me to lose the ability to walk. i'm just going to relish it. and maybe learn from it. but...probably not.

i know i seem pretty great. but here's the thing... i talk to my food. sometimes i sing to it. i won't talk to you in the morning for a good half hour. to get dressed, i'll have to take almost half my clothes out of the closet and throw them on the bed. i fall down in dramatic pain nearly every time i stub my toe. i paint my nails a lot, even though the smell will probably annoy you. i like some really terrible movies and i'll make you watch them. i'll also expect you to laugh at the appropriate times. i hate choosing the restaurant. hate it. you'll have to do it every single time. i'll sing Baby to you. all the time. i'm sort of needy and will need you to cuddle with me possibly daily. i'll pout when the kitchen is messy and get annoyed if the house is too cold.

here's the other thing, though. i won't eat the last of the dessert if i know it's something you really really like. i hate vegetables, but i'll try to learn to cook them if you like them. i'm up for anything (assuming it's not sports related). you want to see how fast we can re-watch LOST? i will sit on the couch with you for hours. you want to go on a diner tour of the state? i call shotgun. i won't steal all the blankets. i'll make a really big deal out of your birthday. i'll do the laundry if you take out the garbage. i'll alphabetize your books and cds and records. i'll bring snacks to church and i'll always always go to village inn at 2 am with you.

basically, sorry you have to deal with my crazy. but i'm betting you have your own list of quirks. because what are the chances i would have married you if you were normal?

sometimes i go on road trips to boise to visit my bestie. these are pictures from one of those times.

remember that time i went on a family vacation to southern utah oh....a month and a half ago? here are some photos to prove that actually happened.

this is what i look like taking pictures sometimes.

you have to look at this picture big to really appreciate the majesty...

we mainly went hiking and hung out with my grandparents and my great grandpa feltner (who was the whole point of the trip). probably my favorite part of the whole weekend was when my mom and i busted out an impromptu verse of "we are the champions" after crossing a log bridge successfully. i'll be honest and say it wasn't too death defying, but things like that always freak me out. i think it traces back to the days when i would always steer my bike into the gutter.

busy busy busy. not like, bad busy. but busy in that good way, where you're never really home, and when you are home you're doing things and talking to people and hopefully eating some delicious food and when you're gone, you're at work [sigh] or adventuring and playing outside and probably getting eaten by a lot of mosquitos and hopefully eating some delicious food. [to recap - the eating of the delicious food is a priority no matter your location or time constraints]

what i'm saying is, i have a lot of pictures i've been wanting to post and things i've wanted to write, but it all seems to have gotten away from me.

so here's this picture, which i find mondo-fabulous (points for knowing that quote) because these are two of my favorite people. i just bought the best of amy poehler and it probably changed my life. i've had the seasons of parks and rec in my amazon cart for a looooong time. it's time they made the journey to my house to live.

and just to end this post about nothing, here's a short list.

something cool i did yesterday - ate sushi on the roof of the library. [ok, if i'm going to be completely honest, we weren't successful in our roof aspirations. we had just walked up allll the stairs to get to the top when they came and locked the gate. but! sushi was consumed on the library grounds, by that cool water wall...thing]

i like to make plans. i like to plan trips and plan out my weekend and know what i'm eating for dinner. i made plans with myself to go to a movie tonight, and it's going to take a lot to get me to break them. i like to plan out what i'll do in the future, which is why last summer i was so freaked out all the time, not knowing what i would be doing once the contract was up for my summer apartment.

but plans change. there was once, what seems like years ago, a thought of a plan for today. but instead, i'm going to work, and watch a woody allen movie, and listen to this song repeatedly. not for any particular reason, but just because i like it a lot.

It's official. I love this summer. Here are some of the reasons why.

- our porch. this is the first real porch i've ever had. we have director's chairs and pretty flower boxes and sammy, the waddling neighborhood cat. i spend so much time out there eating and reading and watching my neighbors' relationship possibly develop into a three-some. (it's confusing. we're all trying to figure it out) (and by we, i mean all my roommates. we stalk them throughout the day)

- ashley has a fire-pit AND invented a new kind of s'more. it involves texas toast. intrigued right? also, i'm looking forward to re-creating the GIANT s'more that was originally made last summer. my sugar tolerance knows no bounds.

- so many awesome weekends have already been had, and they only continue to improve. some examples -

the weekend we got henna tattoos.

and ate waffles.

or the weekend i spent with janiece (photos pending). we thrifted, had a pre-rapture celebration that included sushi and dancing at a beach-themed club (there was a cage. AND a pole), played at the park, hung out in coffee houses, ventured to ikea and provo, and ate a lot of gelato and cupcakes.

or the weekend where they re-opened the pond at liberty park. if you're familiar with gilmore girls, it was pretty much a stars hollow experience. there was a of cheering, a ribbon cutting ceremony, and even a band in the gazebo. even though it started to rain, it was pretty magical. this was also the weekend i made my first pizza, and learned what happens when you light dandelions on fire.

this past week marked my first slurpee of the summer, first major bike-ride of the summer, the head and the heart/iron and wine concert, spending hours on the porch, burning my leg on a motorcycle (rookie mistake), getting attacked by the hair straighter kiosk at the mall, going to a screening of super 8 (looooved it), playing 4-square at FHE, a power-outage party, and so much neighbor stalking. it will conclude with a trip to southern utah with my family to visit my great-grandpa.

like i said. i love this summer.

a bunch of mostly unrelated things.

- i had a seriously awesome two weeks with janiece. we taaaalked and laughed and played with my roommates and ate. and ate. and ate and ate and ate. i've now sampled many more of salt lake's restaurants and it might be a couple weeks before my pants fit right again. bring on the skirts! (good thing they're required at work..)

- hanging with J made me realize one of the good/bad things about being a "grown-up." the more people i meet, it seems like the more people i end up missing. i realize that this phenomenon is amplified now, as my move from cache valley separated me from a lot of people. and i just wish i could get all the people i love in one place. wouldn't that be great? i'm working on it. i hope to accomplish it around the same time i stop putting "grown-up" in quotation marks.

- this video is incred. ...ible. also, it kind of relates to the above topic. look at me, making connections. also, if you care to know, i'm rather obsessed with 'the head & the heart' right now. i even bought their cd. the actual cd. from a music store. right!?

- in the past two days i have been told that i remind people of pheobe from friends, april ludgate from parks and rec, and flo from the progressive insurance commercials. i'm choosing to see the positive aspects of all those personas.

- i bought a yoga mat today and i'm really excited to watch it gather dust in the corner of my room.

lately my weekends have been out of the ordinarily good. i would like to think it's because i'm just that awesome, but i think it's largely due to the super nice weather (i kind of have a thing for being outside. especially because i feel like it validates the possibly boring things i might be doing, like reading or knitting or watching parks and rec on my computer. doing those things inside...you might be lame. sitting on the porch doing them...you're probably cool. or elderly. either way.)

coachella, part two.

last time, on lacy's blog....

when last we left them, lacy and ashley had just finished the second day of their coachella experience. let's see what they're up to now...

day 2 - settling in.
acts seen - trampled by turtles, the tallest man on earth, cage the elephant, jenny & johnny, the new pornographers, bright eyes, mumford & sons, arcade fire

saturday started off awesomely. firstly because our night's sleep was at least 13 times better than the first night and secondly because we made a trip to the craft tent, where we made some pretty kick-ass fans.

we made some lunch, chatted with our neighbors, and were treated to the previously mentioned underwear dancing before we headed over to the venue for our first show of the day, trampled by turtles.

um, wow. they were the first show of the day on the main stage, so they started out with a smaller crowd. soon, their mad banjo-ing had drawn over an impressive audience. (there were a lot more people behind these ones...just so you know)

we spent the rest of the day on the festival grounds watching amazing music, eating minute-maid treats, dancing, and watching the crap out of people.

highlights:

getting to take a shower!...at 6 am.
"who laminated these?" in regards to my setlists.
the "holy crap" effect of so many acts that day. trampled by turtles, tallest man, bright eyes, mumford, arcade fire...
our thought that getting to the front of mumford & sons would be easy. we were still successful, despite the crowd swarm.
a team of skywriters wrote out this really long string of song lyrics (and kind of distracted from cage the elephant's set...) the crowd audibly booed when they realized it was for lady gaga. words are only partially pictured here...

by the third day we were owning this festival. our routine was down and we had mastered the arts of sneaking in food, staying hydrated and tanning instead of burning.

good old war. we couldn't decide whether to go see them or not (they were the first act of the day and 11 seemed early..) but i'm so pleased we did. they were incredible.

almost falling asleep in the shower line after finding out they opened an hour later than normal.
deciding to get hotdogs for lunch. (i get a craving like once a year) the cart was farther away than other food venues we had been frequenting, and the trek back to the car was nearly the end of our lives.

the last night was a little sad, but mostly we were on a music high. the next morning the wind woke us up at 6, and after we had packed up the car like seasoned pros, we made our way out of california. the drive home had some notable experiences, including my first time gambling, crying from laughing in the line for a rollercoaster (which caused the attendant to ask ashley if she was all right), and some really really loud singing.

so there you have it. five amazing days in two lengthy blog posts. next year i'll post one picture for each day and call it good.

coachella, take one.

well it's been nearly two weeks, but i finally have time to blog about the magic of Coachella. it's hard for me to accurately describe it, because it was so amazing. like, easily one of the best weekends of my whole life. (maybe that's overdramatic, but i'm serious. also, welcome to me..)

day 1 - road tripping
the majority of our first day was spent driving, driving. we stopped in vegas for an h&m/fro-yo break. (i have a love/hate relationship with the phrase fro-yo...) we knew we were close when we saw the windmills.

we had to wait in a pretty epic line to get into the car-camping area. they searched every car to make sure no one went over the "case of beer per person" limit. this turned out to mean that everyone got drunk off their ass in line, so as not to be over that limit. we watched drunk people do shadow-puppet shows, dance around, and yell a lot. this got us preeeetty excited to see everyone try to set up their tents and it turned out to be an excellent prequel for the rest of the night.

i didn't actually get a picture of our campsite (fail) but these were our neighbors...with ashley's car on the left.

and here's our "street"

we set up our camp in record time and spent the next little while patting ourselves on the back. we ventured around the campgrounds and familiarized ourselves with the general store, showers, food vendors, and roller-rink.

we decided to set up our camp chairs in the "street" to watch the extreme partying that was quickly escalating all around us. one set of neighbors had the same idea and we bonded over mocking everyone else. we were thusly dubbed the "porch people" by the canadians across the street.

highlights of the day included:

"it seems like they'll pretty much kick you in the face if you get it wrong" me, concerned about putting my wristband on incorrectly.
changing into shorts.
a girl getting pissed when we couldn't locate her friend carlos.
"this is no place for a turtle..." shroomed-out canadian.
another canadian playing the same note on a melodica for probably an hour
the guy who kept walking past doing a chewy impression.
being offered shrooms (guess who from?)
walking in on a drunk guy peeing...and he didn't even notice.
everyone being so joyful about the impending weekend.

day 2 - it begins.

acts seen - the drums, cee lo green, cold war kids, sleigh bells, brandon flowers, black keys, kings of leon

the first real day of the festival is kind of a blur. it was probably a combination of the heat and the very minimal amount of sleep we got (tents provide a surprisingly low amount of noise blockage.) all the bands we saw were really good, with the exception of cee lo, who was angry about being late, and ended up getting cut off in the middle of a song. also, i'm just guessing the kings of leon were good, because i was in some sort of coma by then. i was later informed they had fireworks during their set...and i hadn't even noticed.

highlights included

the black key's set, which was amazing.
the girl wearing a thong bikini and charging $1 a spank. yeeep. we got to see one lucky customer. i would have taken a picture, but i didn't think i'd ever want to look at it again.
"COACHELLA!" "it's SIX in the morning" (a conversation heard outside our tent)
trying to fall asleep during the chemical brothers, during which there were inexplicable horse whinnies. (this was acted out the next afternoon by a still-drunk canadian neighbor. he danced around in his underwear)

so there was a time in high school that i thought i was punk. just to be clear....i wasn't. but i thought i was.

i tripped around in my skater shoes and graphic print volcom tees and anxiously awaited trips to hot topic to restock my supply of pins and rubber bracelets. i listened to super hardcore bands like brand new, green day, and mxpx and went to warped tour like nobody's business.

it was my fondest dream to have some tattooed faux-hawked band guy sing this song to me. since i grew up in idaho, and in a town sorely lacking this type of person, this sadly never happened.

i eventually outgrew this stage of my life, although my punk poser persona (alliteration!) still manifests itself in my affinity for band shirts and colorful hair. (it's currently fuchsia if anyone is keeping a chart...)

there are some truths that are undeniable in my life.

when given a bag of mini cadbury eggs, it will be gone in approximately two days.

i have hands dooown some of the coolest friends ever.

after midnight on the weekend, i would rather be at some dive restaurant than most anywhere else.

i'm going to be more or less broke my whole life. i'm cool with it.

park adventuring, brunch, late nights, and the best of will ferrell will always make me happy.

whenever i feel like i'm kind of starting to lose faith in people, something always happens to change my mind.

i will forever love this song.

i've been on a blogging rooooooll this week. but i can't stop because...today? today is the birthday of one of the coolest people i know. i am talking, of course, about one brittany mangelson.

i seriously love this girl. for many many reasons. a few of which i will share right now.

we have a lot in common. for instance, we're both super attractive.

she is always, always willing to listen to my problems.

she helped me discover my love for golden girls, nutella, and cuffing my jeans.

she has always supported my love of dinosaurs.

she is seriously one of the most easygoing people i know.

she has provided me with some of my most favorite photo moments.

she once sang macy gray so loudly someone slammed their apartment door. i don't care who you are, that's hardcore.

she helped me survive countless classes, and always always shared her snacks. (once, she even offered pretzels and nutella to another classmate. he rudely declined)

i would often find her in my bed....

girl makes me laugh! she can sing, dance, quote obscure movies, and deliver a sarcastic commentary at the drop of a hat.

she is always up for adventures and investigations.

i've seriously never been more impressed with a person than i have been with B. she has TWO babies and is easily the coolest, most amazing mom ever. seeeeeeriously. also, her girls are the cutest things i've ever seen. (good gene combinations mangelsons)

i really just think our friendship was fated to be. we lived together almost three years, and have been friends for nearly five. we've bonded over titanic, dance parties, mocking almost everything, road trips, brownie batter, skipping class, living room sleepovers, being obsessed with christy glass, regina spektor, and the fact that, when combined, our awesomeness grows by about 200%.

lastly, and probably most importantly, brittany has mad dance skillz. see below for evidence.

i often chart weeks i think qualify as remarkable. i thought this last one met the requirements, not so much because of the things i did. more so because of the things i figured out.

last thursday i had a revelation during a phone conversation that pretty much changed my life. so much that i was talk-yelling at my roommate while we were running. so much that i possibly frightened passersby and swore in front of an old man i didn't realize was there. i won't get into specifics because it's full of all the kinds of personal details i tend to avoid. i will say that i'm starting to feel like myself. i didn't even realize i wasn't until...i was. if that makes sense.

other items of note;

i had to crawl under my porch in an attempt by my (previously mentioned) roommate and i to break into our apartment.

i finished freaks and geeks. probably one of my new favorite shows. bummer it only had one season...

my neighbor practiced his nunchucks in the backyard (a regular occurance) but this time they were ON FIRE. (i'm hoping for video footage next time)

finally, my third trip to holi color festival occurred. love love.

please ignore my multi-sectioned bangs and the fact that my eyes are closed 1/3 of the time. (it's a good defense mechanism during color fest...)

ok. i'm going to start doing a weekly (or every-other weekly, or whenever i remember weekly) throwback post. and by throwback, i mean old-school memories, not that kind of mountain dew. although that is delicious. this week it's musically based (which may often be the case) but it might also be stories or photos or video. or maybe one day, a beautiful conglomeration of all...

anyway.

i have an unending respect for the postal service. i was crazy hardcore into this song the summer of 2007, which also happened to be the summer i lived in Connecticut. as fate would have it, two of the lifeguards sang it at the end of the year talent show at the kid's camp i was working at. smitten! (they probably seemed extra awesome in comparison to the high school musical numbers that every single camper performed)

that fall brittany and/or i found this completely amazing cover. i'm fairly certain B and i are responsible for half of the views, and our sophomore roommates started to dread us opening our computers to listen to it...

the violinist pop-in is still my favorite thing ever.

oh...memories. i think i'm really going to enjoy writing these posts.

i never knew the grammy's could make me so happy. i've watched this video many times in the last week (which, considering it's 8 minute run time, shows i can pay attention to things sometimes) and it has yet to not make me smile. i crush on mumford & sons and the avett brothers so hard.

a couple of days ago i decided to come home for lunch instead of wander around the streets of salt lake. i was feeling a little ish and i really wanted a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. for all of the eateries downtown i have yet to find one that makes a pb&j that can rival my own.

the weather was so nice i decided to eat my lunch on the porch. (and now i'm glad i enjoyed it while i could, as there is once again snow on the ground. i'm not complaining though, so far salt lake winters are a walk in the park compared to logan (literally. we walked in the park on sunday. JACKET-LESS. ah! double parenthesis!))

on second glance, is it more creepy than cool to have a picture of my disembodied legs? let me know.

some older staff members will share overly personal life details, such as their wife going through menopause, or their recent bouts of kidney stones AND constipation.

carrying a key fob automatically makes you feel important.

if a person feels something isn't appropriate for ladies' ears he can simply cover said ladies' ears with his hands. (....apparently)

being cold and being cold in a dress are two very different things.

overall, stock brokers are pretty cranky.

if the elevator doors open i immediately exit, assuming it's my floor. it usually isn't.

small town life has not adequately prepared me for the technicalities of a world filled with escalators and revolving doors. i'm hesitant to use both.

i will eat anything that is consistently in front of me. i don't even like peanut m&ms, but since there's a jar of them on my desk i eat a minimum of 12 every day.

given my longtime phobia of being walked in on in the bathroom, needing a key to access the facilities is incredibly reassuring.

this happens far too often.

guys, i know i come across as extremely well-rounded, awesome, and well-adjusted. it may come as a shock to you that i am also deeply flawed.

for example:

my average laundry "dryer to dresser" time is 3 days.

i shush inanimate objects. (usually when i'm the only one awake, and knocking over things in the kitchen)

i hate going to the post office.

i'm really terrible at returning phone calls.

i still find it acceptable to say things like "let's blow this popsicle stand."

i sometimes obsess. often over things that don't matter. but sometimes over things that do. almost always over things i have no control over.

and finally, i hate hate hate waiting. i've been trying to be patient my whole life. but as it turns out, i'm not very good at it. i hate waiting for my pasta to cook. i hate waiting in line at the grocery store. i hate waiting for my hair to grow. i hate waiting for movies to come out. and mostly, i hate when the waiting has no end in sight. when maybe it's better to stop waiting. but how do you stop?

asking vague hypothetical questions and expecting an answer. that's getting added to the flaw list.

here's the thing.

i like to pretend that i'm crafty. i read crafty blogs and star posts thinking "psh, i could totally do that." (i couldn't) i've attended various "crafting" parties....but rarely finish whatever the project was. i knit things....but often i make the scarves wider than intended....and run out of yarn....and have to turn it into a "neck cozy". (true story)

and sometimes i try to build bookshelves...
and they end up looking like this.

and yes, i maybe could have taken my clothes off the shelf before documenting my inept building skills. i'll just add "photographing craftiness" onto the long list of things i'm not very good at.

i tried to redeem myself in a little battle called "lacy vs. the contact paper" [cue impressive gong sound]

this was the end result.

luckily the photo is far enough away that it looks preeeeetty good. (pat on the back for lacy)

also pictured are the tools that made it all possible. my surprisingly crappy scissors, a razor (who made up for the nonexistent work morale of the scissors), a summer photo cd used for smoothing, post-it's in lieu of tape, and my serial killers book for moral support. (and maybe like a weight or something)

not pictured - brand new/old vinyl purchased mere hours before, during an impromptu record store drop by. (it's probably going to be a bad thing that it's conveniently located on my route home from work) said records maintained my sanity through this grueling 15-minutes process. (edit. upon review you can glimpse the records in the before picture. see! i wasn't lying...)

this $13 walmart bookcase has officially been more trouble than it was worth. next time i'll just keep my clothes in organized piles on the floor...
